minor

James Funnell kept the Morris Minor flag flying in special saloons with a long career spanning approx 1978 to 1993 . Sponsored by the Houghton-on-the-Hill Garage , Leicester who are long standing `Moggy` specialists , more latterly known as Minorite (UK) Ltd.
The car evolved quite alot over the years , growing side pods and cut down removable doors as the whole hood was turned into a `clam shell` hinged at the back. Always used a BDA 1300cc engine.

Andy Barton 1964

The next northern-based driver to use the Moggy to make a name for himself was Newcastle garage owner Andy Barton. His white and blue Minor was even older than Ratcliffe`s by the mid-1960s as it was a series 1 ( 1946-53 ) with the lower headlights. Barton was very succesful at Croft and Rufforth without tending to venture much further south and became part of the Croft folklore with subsiquent Minis and various single seaters.
In the 80`s he raced a March-based AC ME3000 in Special GT races.

Mike Bennion built one the very first true hybrid supersaloons during 1966 when he put a Chevy V8 and Jaguar suspension and gearbox into a series 1 Minor ! Some car to make your first race with at Castle Combe in 1967.
Mike was born in Penzance in 1942 and based in Leamington Spa becoming a leading figure for SAAB UK.
Photo left captures the heat haze coming out of the short pipes with a noise described as like an aircraft taking off.
A longtime pal of Mick Hill `s sadly Mike passed away in the noughties but his beast of a car lives on ( below ) . It would be a fitting tribute if this legendary car could return to the tracks in the future.

"...front row compatriot Mike Chittenden right on his tail with the mongrel 1650 Ford-powered Morris Minor 1000. Chittenden was really trying and screwing his beast into all sorts of lurid angles in an effort to find a way past" - Autosport March 1970

Mike Chittenden had a reputation as a very fast driver at Brands Hatch in various Ford`s but in 1970 he stood out as the only Moggy racer left ,though he did use a Ford 1650cc ( pushrod ? ). Mike`s blue Mog had become a regular sight at Brands but unfortunatley the car was written off sometime in October 1970 and the engine put into a newly-aquired Ford Anglia. He was quoted as saying the Anglia was faster but didnt handle as well as the old Mog.
